Cappiello, often hailed as the “father of modern advertising,” revolutionized poster design by departing from the painterly quality of his predecessors. In this striking composition, a woman grapples with an oversized potted lemon tree, her struggle exaggerated against a bold black background. The incongruity of the scene gives the design its unmistakable zest. Commissioned for the Fournier-Demars distiller, this poster is the first of three Cappiello created for them. His innovative use of bold figures and fresh colors set him apart from premier poster artist Jules Chéret.
