The Atomic Jet-Gun was a British-made toy gun inspired by the adventures of the comic book hero Dan Dare. It was a red and yellow plastic water pistol claimed to fire 50 shots with a single filling.Ray gun toys were popular at the time. as can be seen, for example, in the “Lucky Tommy Gun,” “Atomic Disintegrator,” and “Ray-W-Gun” posters.One of the most popular of British space heroes, Dan Dare was the main character in the English illustrated boys magazine Eagle. The Eagle Comic originally ran from 19501969. The character was created and originally illustrated by Frank Hampson, who contributed to The Eagle from 1950 to 1961. In these stories, he was a “fearless pilot of the future” who fired his gun only in self defense and always told the truth. The original artwork was drawn in bright innovative colors and the printing process was completely new and unique. The 1950’s was a time of wonder and many young minds were focused on the science fiction universe. Hollywood adopted science fiction and the toy industry followed closely.Many toy ray guns were produced using the Dan Dare name. Among the more popular is the Atomic Jet-Gun by Crescent. Crescent Toys was a British toy manufacturing company in operation from 1922 to 1980. The London-based company manufactured lead figures and animals, die cast metal vehicles, toy guns, hollow cast and later plastic figures and toy soldiers of various historical periods.1950/England
