Margaret Hoopes, along with her sister Florence, left an indelible mark on the world of illustration. Their collaborative work graced the pages of the beloved Alice and Jerry children’s books, akin to the iconic Dick and Jane series. Born in 1895, Margaret embarked on her artistic journey early, designing Christmas cards at just 12 years old. The sisters, who resided in Philadelphia, often used neighborhood children as models for their sketches, meticulously documenting their creative process. UW Special Collections houses 25 sketchbooks that belonged to the Hoopes sisters, containing a rich array of their work from the 1920s onward. These sketchbooks, acquired by Susan Barribeau, the English-language humanities librarian, provide a glimpse into their artistic evolution. Beyond their illustrations, the Hoopes collection includes correspondence with publishers like Row, Peterson, and Houghton Mifflin Company. Their legacy continues to expand, revealing new series and publications that captivate art enthusiasts and historians alike.
