Hugh Clark (1745-1822) was a British heraldic engraver and author, best known for his work in the field of heraldry. He apprenticed under Thomas Orpin, a goldsmith, and later became an accomplished engraver. His notable contribution is the book “Introduction to Heraldry”, which served as a comprehensive guide to the study of coats of arms, crests, and other heraldic symbols. Clark’s expertise extended to creating trade cards, some of which are preserved in collections like the Banks Collection and the Heal Collection. His legacy endures through his valuable insights into the art and science of heraldry, providing a bridge between historical tradition and contemporary understanding.
