Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was an American artist who worked for many magazines. Today is is mostly well known for his contributions to First World War recruiting efforts through his poster art.”If You Want to Fight! Join the Marines,” created in 1915, was another of his posters intended to recruit young men to join the Marines. It shows a half-length portrait of a woman-Maebelle Gertrude Thompson, one of the famous “Christy Girls” and also Christy’s wife-dressed in the blue uniform of an officer. She carries a sword resting on her hip, her fist wrapped around the handle. Supply bags are strapped over her shoulder. She is clearly ready to fight. In her other hand, she carries a small pouch that may contain binoculars or a spyglass. In the distance are troops, their backs to her, each carrying a bayonet and marching off to battle, following their regiment into the horizon. The soldiers carry the U.S. flag and the flag of the Marines.If you want to fight at the time, however, you had to be a man. Women were not allowed to join the Marines until 1918 (and then only for clerical work). But the woman in the poster was intended to show those who want to fight a sample of who they were fighting to protect. This is in contrast to a different approach taken on another famous Christy poster.1915/USA
