The Waleco Coconut candy bar holds a fascinating place in confectionery history. It was created by F.B. Washburn Candy, America’s oldest family-owned candy business, which began as an offshoot of the Washburn Bakery in 1856. The company initially gained popularity with its coconut macaroon cookies. From there, the idea of making a candy bar emerged, leading to the birth of the famous Waleco Coconut bar. This success paved the way for other candy bars, including the Washburn Peanut Bar, similar to today’s Planter’s Peanut Bar. The Waleco Coconut became particularly famous and was even advertised locally on the radio during Boston Braves and Boston Red Sox games. Over time, F.B. Washburn Candy expanded its offerings, specializing in old-fashioned hard candies like Sour Balls, Peppermint Starlights, and Lollipops. Although the candy bar business eventually declined, the company continued to thrive, concentrating exclusively on hard candy. Now into its second generation of Gilson family management, F.B. Washburn Candy remains a sweet legacy, with exciting new flavors joining its existing hard candy lines.
