Horatio Alger Jr. (1832-1899) was an American author whose impact on young adult literature reverberated from 1868 until his death. His novels often followed the classic “rags-to-riches” narrative, portraying impoverished boys who rose from humble backgrounds to middle-class security through hard work and good deeds. Alger’s breakthrough came with “Ragged Dick” (1868), the story of a poor bootblack’s ascent to middle-class respectability. This novel’s success set the stage for many more works, each featuring stock characters: the valiant, hardworking youth; the noble mysterious stranger; the snobbish youth; and the evil, greedy antagonist. While his fiction occasionally grew stale, Alger’s publisher suggested he explore the Western United States for fresh material. Despite the change in backdrop, his themes remained consistent: the triumph of virtue and diligence. Alger’s legacy endures as a formative influence on American literature, emphasizing perseverance and moral character in the face of adversity.
